Even though 13-year-old Budhilal Chepang, who hails from Gharding, looks petite, she works like any other adult.
She came to Kathmandu a year back and has been working in a house in Anamnagar as domestic help and studying at the same time at Sahid Shukra Secondary School in Bag Bazaar. She gets to study only after she is done with her work in the mornings and evenings.
Budhilal washes clothes, does the dishes, goes shopping, plays with the little children, cleans the house and makes sure that there is water. All the tiring work still doesn’t deter her from studying.
After she came to the capital city, she came first in her class in class four. After she comes back from school every day, the house chores don’t let her study like she wants to. It’s only after 10pm, when the whole family is done with their dinner, that she actually gets to do her homework and she hits the sack around 12:30am.
When a neighbor of hers residing in Kathmandu informed her about the quality of education being better in the city than in the village, she came to the capital. “Even though I’m working, I can still study and top the class. One can only be successful if they work hard,” she says with optimism.
Sahid Shukra Secondary School has more students who work and study at the same time. And they all work, they informed that they make the best use of their time in the evenings and early mornings.
13-year-old Sita Gharti of Dhang works in a house in Bag Bazaar and she too came to the city after her neighbors suggested it to her parents. “I too get to study after I am done with the household chores in the evening,” she shares.
16-year-old Ambika Shrestha, a student of class seven in the same school, has also been working as domestic help since she was young. “My parents didn’t give much attention to our education because they were too busy looking after our daily stuff, that’s why I couldn’t progress in class according to my age,” she opines.
After school, every day, she looks after three kids in the house she works in, feeds them, cooks food for the family, washes clothes and helps the kids with their homework. “I only get free around 11pm and then I study till 12am but since that’s not enough, I get up at 4am and study again,” she shares.
“We don’t get time to do our homework and we haven’t been able to give much time to our studies at all. I take a time out of 10 to 15 minutes every hour and study during that time,” says Sarita.
Most of the students who work as domestic help and study at the same time, are weaker than other students informed of the teachers of the school. Most of them find English and Mathematics complicated.
